Elizabeth Holmes in court: Theranos founder loses the signature turtleneck for legal appearance

Former Theranos CEO Elizabeth Holmes appeared in court for the first time since the release of the HBO documentary The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley in March.

Holmes, 35, who was reportedly inspired by Steve Jobs to wear her signature turtleneck daily, appeared in a light blue button-up and a grey blazer.

Holmes and her former COO, Ramesh 'Sunny' Balwani, face nine counts of wire fraud and two counts of conspiracy to commit wire fraud. Their medical company, Theranos, accumulated hundreds of millions of dollars from investors under false pretences. They claimed their device, the Edison, could run hundreds of tests using only a single drop of blood. Holmes said Theranos hoped to eventually have an Edison in every household.

During the court appearance, a judge pushed the trial date to July 8, as there are 20 million pages of documents to review for the case.

Holmes and Balwani have both pleaded not guilty to the charges and if convicted come July 8, could face up to 20 years in prison. Prior to their trial, they will return to court June 10 for procedural matters.

In the wake of the scandal a new film, Bad Blood, starring Jennifer Lawrence, is set to tell the story of Theranos and Holmes, as well as Hulu’s upcoming series The Dropout, starring Kate McKinnon.
