Elizabeth Debicki stars as Princess Diana in final two series of The Crown

The Crown will see actress Elizabeth Debicki play the role of Princess Diana in the final two series of the hit Netflix drama.

The Australian star, who has appeared in The Great Gatsby and The Night Manager, has been cast by show producers as the royal for the dramatic last two seasons.

Elizabeth is set to appear in distressing scenes for the fifth and sixth series, which will include Diana's tragic death during a car crash in Paris in 1997.

The 29-year-old star is the same age as Diana was back in 1990 - the same year the Netflix show begins the story with the princess' appearance, which makes her the perfect fit.

Elizabeth has striking resemblance to the late royal, with her chiselled features and icy blue eyes.

She said of her new role to Netflix: "Princess Diana's spirit, her words and her actions live in the hearts of so many.

"It is my privilege and honour to be joining this masterful series, which has had me absolutely hooked from episode one."

The actress recognises her new role is huge deal to tackle, as she was chosen among the likes of Oscar-nominee Florence Pugh, Saoirse Ronan and Sophie Turner.

A show insider told the outlet: "Season five and six will see Diana emerging as an effortless icon with superstar quality but yet still retaining that fragility.

"The role requires a fearless actor to bring truth to this beloved yet complex icon. Elizabeth had that perfect combination of megawatt star quality and vulnerability."

Producers believe Elizabeth was an "instant hit" and they knew they had "found the perfect Diana" for the final two series.

They added: "As well as having the acting ability to tackle such a challenging role, the obvious similarities between Elizabeth and Diana in terms of appearance also made her a natural choice."

The starlet is set to arrive in the fifth series, where the show will cover the 1990s when Charles and Diana split up and divorced in 1996.

It's set to be a huge deal for the Hollywood star, who has carved out an incredible acting career for herself.
