Elixir Distillers’ new Islay distillery gets the green light

The Argyll & Bute Council planning committee has granted planning permission to Elixir Distillers to build its new distillery on Islay.

Co-founders Sukhinder and Rajbir Singh said that their plans combine the best elements of tradition and modernity in both design and production.

“We’ve worked closely with the Argyll & Bute planning committee to create plans for a distillery that fits into the landscape and supports the community,” they stated.

London-based Elixir Distillers’ plans include a visitor centre and a multi-purpose educational facility, along with an apprentice programme to train the next generation of distillers.

Details are now being finalised on the construction, with the objective of breaking ground later this year.

The interior will include floor maltings capable of supplying more than half of the full capacity of the distillery.

Oliver Chilton, head blender at Elixir Distillers, commented: “Having our own distillery will be a fantastic opportunity to apply the same methodology and passion for flavour in a drive to make truly great spirit to enhance the incredible reputation that Islay single malt already has.”

The company had submitted an application in August 2018 to build a distillery with timber and copper cladding and a turf-covered roof.

But after talks with council planners, they redesigned with whitewashed walls and slate-grey roofing, like other Islay distilleries Bowmore, Laphroaig and Ardbeg.

Elixir Distillers also produces Irish, Japanese and American whiskies, along with rum and tequila.

Its core brands include Port Askaig, Elements of Islay, Single Malts of Scotland and Black Tot, which are exported to more than 20 international markets.
