Eliud Kipchoge and Britain's richest man hatch plan to make marathon history

London Marathon winner Eliud Kipchoge will return to the streets of the capital this autumn for another tilt at the first sub-two hour marathon.

Two years after getting within 26 seconds of the mark in a customised attempt on the Monza Grand Prix circuit, the Kenyan is ready for a second go.

"I want to run under two hours," said Kipchoge. "This will surpass everything I have achieved because it will be history for the human family."

This time the project to become long distance running’s Sir Roger Bannister will be bankrolled by Britain’s richest man, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, and his Ineos company.

Ratcliffe has already taken over Team Sky’s all-conquering cycling team and revealed an interest in buying Chelsea football club.

Mo Farah sorry for overshadowing London Marathon but insists 'I told the truth'

Kipchoge, 34, set the marathon world record in Berlin last year when clocking 2:01.39.

That was slower than his Monza run but as that Nike-funded attempt had in-out pacemakers his time of 2:00.25 could not count for record purposes.

So impressive was Kipchoge in winning his fourth London Marathon a week ago - three minutes ahead of Mo Farah - that he has been persuaded to forego the World Athletics Championships in Doha for another shot at the mythical mark.
