Elite girls' school stands down teacher over sex assault allegations

Ivanhoe Girls' Grammar said they were not aware of any risks to current or former students.

A teacher at an elite private girls' school in Melbourne's north-east has been suspended as police investigate allegations of sexual assault.

Ivanhoe Girls' Grammar School principal Heather Schnagl sent a letter to former students, informing them a current member of staff was under investigation by the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) after allegations were made.

The VIT suspended the teacher's registration and the teacher has been stood down by the school.

"The school is legally compelled to take this action as a result of the suspension and is in no position to make any judgment regarding any allegations," Ms Schnagl said.

In the letter, she said the allegations were not associated in any way with the school, and the school was not aware of any risk to current or former students.

Victoria Police has confirmed that detectives from the Box Hill Sexual Offences and Child Abuse Investigation Team are investigating allegations of sexual assault at an eastern suburbs school between 1981 and 1983.

Ms Schnagl said the school was cooperating with the investigation.

"We have little information at this stage but we are cooperating fully with all involved in the investigations and we will update you as we can," she wrote.

"Whilst the allegations do not relate to our school, it is important that we emphasise should any current or former students, or parents have concerns about any staff member at Ivanhoe Girls', the school would like to hear from you and assist you."

Ivanhoe Girls' Grammar is an Anglican school with about 1,000 current students. It was established in 1903.
