Elina Svitolina battles past Madison Keys in straight sets to reach first US Open quarter-final

Elina Svitolina produced a ruthless performance as she reached the US Open quarter-finals with a straight sets win over Madison Keys.

The Ukrainian's patient approach paid off as she benefitted from a series of errors from the 2017 finalist to win 7-5, 6-4 in one hour and 15 minutes on court.

The 24-year-old, who had never got past the fourth round here before, will face Johanna Konta in the last eight on Tuesday.

With two of the top 10 players in the women's game, it promised to be a match filled with quality - and so it proved early on.

Svitolina served accurately - 91 per cent of her serves won in the first set - while Keys displayed her power on the forehand with 20 winners.

It wasn't until the 11th game that the match took a turn. Keys made one too many errors by planting the shots into the net and Svitolina reaped the rewards as she won the first set 7-5.

The first set statistics read 20 winners and 21 unforced errors, while Svitolina had seven and six. The cautious approach seemed to be working, waiting for Keys to make the errors.

It was more of the same in the second set and despite the crowd's attempts to encourage Keys, she was broken in the third game after struggling with her footwork.

Credit had to go for Svitolina for making life as difficult as possible for her 24-year-old opponent. Tactically, she was well prepared for everything the American was throwing at her.

Keys began to race through her service games with love holds but it mattered little when she had won exactly zero break point opportunities from Svitolina.

That continued to be the case as Keys struggled to find her way past the tape off Svitolina's serve.

And the Odessa-born player had no trouble making certain of the victory with a routine hold after more errors from Keys.

The first Ukrainian into the last eight since 2009, an intriguing battle with Konta awaits this talented young player.
