Elijah's life has been changed for the better thanks to your kind donations

Elijah Parsons was born with huge difficulties and has not always been able to do what other kids can.

The now 10-year-old has Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus and can't walk unaided.

But he received a specialist bike from the Sunshine Fund which his mum says has changed his life.

He can now join in on family dog walks, play with his friends and could even begin to cycle himself to high school next year.

"It's given him a massive confidence boost because he knows he can do it himself," mum Jo, 39, said. "He likes to be as independent as he can be."

When Jo was 30 weeks pregnant, she found out that her baby son would be born with Spina Bifida.

"It was quite hard and came as a bit of a shock," the physiotherapist added.

Elijah was then born with an open lesion on his back and had to be operated on at just hours old.

When he was two, he had to have a shunt fitted to drain the fluid out of his brain caused by his Hydrocephaly.

Jo, who also has daughter Hannah, nine, said: "It affects his attention and he can get quite anxious and become fixated and obsessed with things."

Elijah has not been diagnosed with a learning difficulty but does struggle with certain things.

But the Kingston Park Primary School pupil follows the national curriculum and takes everything that life throws at him.

The Walkerville family, have applied for help from the Sunshine Fund on multiple occasions and Elijah was given a specialist bike years ago but he has now outgrown it.

He has also been given specialist wheelchairs throughout his life.

The charity dedicates their time to purchasing specialist equipment for local children like Elijah who wouldn't be able to get it on the NHS or by any other means.

They are in the midst of their annual Go Bananas campaign where they aim to raise £40,000 to help change these children's lives for the better.

Jo and training police officer husband Aaron, 40, applied for a bike to fit Elijah's new needs which would have cost them around £3,000.

"We've had five pieces of equipment from the Sunshine Fund now and everything has been focused on on giving him independence.

"We're really grateful, it's amazing."
