Elie Youan backs 'physical' Hearts for Europa League glory but reckons FC Zurich are technically better

Elie Youann reckons FC Zurich are technically better than Hearts, but the Hibs striker has backed their city rivals to get the job done.

Robbie Neilson takes his team to Switzerland next week after taking on Dundee United in Sunday’s Premiership clash. Neilson’s former club suffered the humiliation of equalling the record Scottish European defeat - held by Hibs and Celtic - after their 7-0 Europa Conference League thrashing by AZ Alkmaar last Thursday.

The Jambos meet FC Zurich for a spot in the lucrative Europa League group stages, with the first leg at St Gallen’s Kyburnpark on Thursday, August 18 before the return encounter at Tynecastle a week later. Youan hails from St Gallen and is on loan from the Swiss Super League side at Easter Road. Their ground is being used for the clash due to a concert being staged at Zurich’s Letzigrund the night after Hearts are in town.

Youan knows both teams well after taking part in his first Edinburgh derby last weekend. He believes Franco Foda’s side are easier on the eye than Hibs’ city neighbours, but thinks ultimately the men in maroon will get the job done and progress.

“St Gallen’s my home, I like it a lot,” he said. “For me, Hearts are stronger than Zurich physically but technically I think Zurich are better than them.

"It will be a good game. But for me, Hearts will beat them.”

Youan provided the assist for Martin Boyle’s dramatic stoppage equaliser in the capital clash. Lawrence Shankland’s first league goal for Hearts looked to have given them derby bragging rights once again.

And Youann says derbies in his homeland just don't compare to the atmosphere he sampled last week.

“Edinburgh is my first big experience. It’s the capital city and everything – the country, the city, the teams, the fans, the people – is a new and big experience in my life,” he added.

“I had already played in a derby in Switzerland and the atmosphere was similar – but not like that! It was amazing, the fans played a big role in helping us during the game.”
