Elias Sorensen starts season back in the Under-23s despite shortage of strikers at Newcastle United

Elias Sorensen will kick-off pre-season training with the Under-23s - despite the club's lack of strikers.

The Danish hotshot bagged 20 goals for the reserves last season and also spent a loan stint at Blackpool before helping the young Magpies reach the Premier League 2 play-off final and the Premier League Cup final.

But even though he was hoping for a first-team chance, Sorensen must now impress in summer training with the second string.

United promoted three youngsters to the senior end of the training ground, namely Thomas Allan, Mo Sangare and Nathan Harker.

Newcastle are short on strikers with Ayoze Perez sold to Leicester City this week and Salomon Rondon's loan from West Bromwich Albion over.

Dwight Gayle has returned from the Hawthorns after a successful stint last term but Yoshinori Muto and Joselu also reported for training.

Sorensen ended last season hoping for a senior chance.

He said in May: "I'm open minded.

"I am just waiting to see what the club want me to do.

"If they want me to go on loan I will happily do that and if they want me to stay I will be happy to do that.

"It is just up to the club what happens now."

Víctor Fernández is also back after a season of injuries but was also sent to Spain with the second string.
