Elias Sorensen recalled by Newcastle United following disappointing loan spell at Carlisle United

Elias Sorensen has been recalled by Newcastle United following a disappointing loan spell at Carlisle United.

The young Danish striker made just one league start for the League Two outfit, with four cup appearances and a further seven cameos from the bench.

Discussions had taken place between Carlisle boss Chris Beech and the Magpies' loans co-ordinator Shola Ameobi, and the club confirmed on Friday that Sorensen had returned to St James' Park.

The 20-year-old - who was top scorer for United's second-string last season with 20 goals - is eligible for selection for the young Magpies' Premier League International Cup clash with Blackburn Rovers on Friday night.

United's statement reads: "Newcastle United have recalled Elias Sørensen from his loan spell with Carlisle United.

"The Danish youngster joined the Cumbrians for the season in August, but has started just one league game, making a further seven appearances from the bench and appearing in four cup games.

"Under the terms of the deal, the loan can be cut short in January and, following discussions between Newcastle's loan manager Shola Ameobi and Carlisle head coach Chris Beech, Sørensen has now returned to St. James' Park.

"The 20-year-old could be involved in Friday evening's Premier League International Cup game against Blackburn Rovers (kick-off 7pm GMT). Sørensen was Newcastle's top goalscorer at under-23 level last term, hitting 20 goals."

Academy chief Ben Dawson revealed at the end of November the Magpies were monitoring Sorensen's situation closely, and insisted the League Two club could have no qualms with the youngster's attitude.

Dawson said: "It is a difficult one for him.

"Ultimately he needs to try to get in their team (Carlisle).

"Sometimes showing a bit of will can send a message to the manager by showing he is prepared to play in those type of games.

"It's him saying: 'Look I am digging in here and working hard and want to play', so in that respect it's not a bad thing.

"We are obviously monitoring the situation closely."
