Elia Caprile profiled after goalkeeper completes Leeds United transfer

Leeds United have completed their first signing of the January transfer window, snapping up 18-year-old goalkeeper Elia Caprile on a permanent deal.

The Whites entered the window with three positions of need -  more depth between the sticks, another striker following the recall of Eddie Nketiah and a winger to replace Jack Clarke, who also saw a loan spell end prematurely.

The first of these has now been ticked off after the teenager put pen to paper on a three-and-a-half year deal at Elland Road.

Here is a look at the young stopper, who has joined Leeds' goalkeeping corps...

Who is Elia Caprile?

Caprile is an 18-year-old goalkeeper who is currently contracted to Chievo Verona in Italy's second tier.

Despite being highly-rated, he is yet to play for the first-team. But he has racked up over 40 appearances for the ‘Primavera’ side.

What has he done?

Though not at first-team level, Caprile has plenty of experience of playing football matches. The goalkeeper has made 40-plus appearances for Chievo's reserve team.

But he did appear on the bench 13 times for Chievo in Serie A last term, meaning he was in and around the first-team squad fairly frequently.

As well as playing for Chievo at club level, the Italian has also played for Italy's Under-18s once, playing 45 minutes of a 3-0 defeat to France in February last year.

Why have Leeds moved to sign him?

With Leeds still awaiting the FA's next move regarding Kiko Casilla's misconduct charge, the club have moved to add depth to their goalkeeping ranks.

Frenchman Illan Meslier, who made an impressive debut in the FA Cup defeat at Arsenal earlier this month, is the clear number two behind Casilla, with Kamil Miazek, who is yet to make a senior appearance, the next in line.

Caprile, who was present at Elland Road to take in the defeat to Sheffield Wednesday earlier this month, has begun training with the senior goalkeepers and is likely to be given experience in the under-23s side in the short term.
