Eli Brooks leads Michigan basketball to upset of North Carolina, 73-64

PARADISE ISLAND, Bahamas _ Add Michigan basketball to the list of teams with major upsets this early season.

The Wolverines got a marvelous game from Eli Brooks that included 24 points, and five rebounds while helping surprise fourth-ranked North Carolina 73-64 in the semifinal round of the Battle 4 Atlantis on Thursday.

Michigan will play either Gonzaga or Oregon in Friday's 2 p.m. championship game.

The Wolverines improved to 6-0 in Juwan Howard's first season as the coach, despite star guard Zavier Simpson missing large chunks of the game due to foul trouble.

Michigan broke open a close game with a 19-0 run of points midway through the second half to lead 60-36. North Carolina (5-1) closed within 69-61 with 1:30 to play.

A 3-point basket by Brooks was the dagger that put the Wolverines up by 11 points with 1:06 left.
