Hail has fallen in parts of Elermore Vale, in Newcastle's western suburbs.
Resident Josh Gibson sent a picture of a dustpan full of small icy pellets he collected in his backyard on Friday morning.
He also recorded video footage of the dusting.
Mr Gibson said the hail began to fall just after 11.30am and lasted "a good 20 minutes".
"The ground is covered in it," he said.
The Bureau of Meteorology is predicting 90 per cent chance of rain for the remainder of Friday, with 95 per cent likelihood forecast - along with light winds - for Saturday.
