Elephant Man's 'lost unmarked grave found after 130-year search'

The unmarked grave of Joseph Merrick – known as the “Elephant Man” – has been found after 130 years, an author claims.

Merrick’s deformity, believed to be a rare genetic disorder, made him a freak-show attraction in Victorian times.

Jo Vigor-Mungovin, who wrote his biography, believes he was buried at the City of London Cemetery.

She said records showed him living at London Hospital when he died, aged 27, on April 11, 1890.

She claimed they showed Joseph was buried on April 24 and correctly named the coroner at his inquest as Wynne Baxter.

“Everything fits, it is too much to be a coincidence,” said the author, who hopes a plaque will mark the site.
