A wild bull elephant killed a tourist exercising near his tent at a campground in Khao Yai National Park on Monday morning.

A park ranger said the elephant had previously killed two local residents.

The attack happened at the campground of the Kho Yor 4 national park conservation unit about 5.30am.

The dead camper was identified as Jirathachai Jiraphatboonyathorn from Lop Buri.

Witnesses said the 69-year-old man was working out, walking near his tent about an hour before sunrise and he met Phlai Oiwan, a wild male elephant feeding outside his forest boundary.

The elephant rushed at the man, grabbed him with his trunk, slammed him to the ground and stomped on him. He was killed instantly, about 20 metres from his tent.

Other campers watched in horror. No one dared to leave their tent to help, fearing for their own safety.

Khao Yai rangers and local police rushed to the scene and scared the elephant away.
