Elephant and Castle put on lockdown after reports of suspicious vehicle

An area of Elephant & Castle was cordoned off on Wednesday while police investigated reports of a suspicious vehicle.

Roads in the area were shut off, with photos showing emergency service vehicles near a people carrier with a full boot inside the cordon.

The Bakerloo Line also had no service between Elephant & Castle and Lambeth North while police investigated the incident.

The Metropolitan Police confirmed there had been reports of a "suspect vehicle".

A tweet from the Southwark Police account said: "Officers are making inquiries after a suspicious vehicle was reported at 10.20hrs in St George's Road."

At 11.50am the account said the incident was being cleared, saying: "The incident has now been stood down - roads will reopen shortly."
