Elemis just launched a pro-collagen cleansing balm for your body

It claims to provide 24-hour skin hydration, even after rinsing - (Elemis/The Independent)

If you’ve ever used the Elemis pro-collagen cleansing balm, you’ll understand why the spa brand is so renowned for its make-up remover. With a texture like melted butter and an uncanny ability to dissolve everything from stubborn waterproof mascara to heavy foundations, it’s no wonder this luxe product has expanded across five scents in its 13 years on the market.

It seems there’s no limit to beauty obsessives’ fascination with the pro-collagen collection and, in response to that demand, Elemis has made an exciting pivot. That’s right, your favourite cleanser is now available as a body cleansing balm, i.e. a shower gel.

The Elemis pro-collagen body cleansing balm (£45, Elemis.com) harnesses the same core ingredients you know and love. Chiefly: padina pavonica algae, which is at the heart of all the brand’s pro-collagen products and – in theory – works to hydrate parched skin and kickstart collagen production.

Collagen, as you’ll likely know by now (it’s somewhat of an industry buzzword of late), plays a huge part in the firmness and elasticity of our skin. Unfortunately our collagen supplies diminish as we age, so can a wash off product like Elemis’ new pro-collagen body cleansing balm work against visible signs of bodily ageing? I haven’t got my hands on the formula to road test it just yet (review pending), but here’s everything I know in the meantime.

Elemis pro-collagen body cleansing balm

The key draw of Elemis’s latest release is undoubtedly its clinically proven claim to provide 24-hour skin hydration, even after rinsing. Admittedly, I’m not impressed by the results of a 33-person clinical trial, but a separate 120-person study also found that 96 per cent of users “agreed this product cleanses without leaving the skin feeling stripped or dry” – which carries a little more gravitas.

Much like the original face washes, I have high hopes for an indulgent textural experience with Elemis’ body cleansing balm. Only time will tell whether it lives up to its predecessors; however, the brand’s description of a balm-to-milk-to-foam consistency certainly has my attention.
