Arvo Volmer, the former chief conductor of Adelaide Symphony Orchestra (ASO), returns to direct the orchestra in the music he loves best – music marked by an untamed spirit.
The evening features Armenian cellist Narek Hakhnazaryan, who will join the orchestra to open Tchaikovsky’s Rococo Variations. The variations were inspired by Mozart, Tchaikovsky’s role model, and his finely balanced music. The ASO will also perform Sibelius’ last great orchestral work, Tapiola.
The evening will be completed with Nielsen’s fourth symphony, which the Danish composer created as a manifesto for his music. He wanted the symphony to evoke the most primal sources of life, and “the wellspring of life-feeling”, he wrote. “It is in a way a completely thoughtless expression of what make the birds cry, the animals roar, bleat, run and fight, and humans moan, groan and exult and shout without explanation.”
