The Probation Department will likely begin using electronic bracelets on drink-driving probationers in mid-2018.
The terms of reference are being drafted to rent 4,000 electronic monitoring devices within a budget of 100 million baht, director-general Prasarn Mahaleetrakul said on Monday.
The procurement will likely to be completed in May, when the devices are ready to be used on drink-driving probationers.
The department may have to continue seeking the budget for at least three consecutive years to achieve the purpose, he added.
A high-ranking official at the department told the Bangkok Post the device was intended for those put on probation restricting movements by the court or those viewed as a risk if allowed to move out of designated locations.
For the 2018 New Year long holiday, Mr Prasarn said existing measures will be used for the probationers. Among them are social services at medical facilities and morgue visits.
To promote conscience and awareness, the probationers will be brought to witness the impacts and carnage of road accidents.
They will work as traffic volunteers and road rescue workers, donate blood and help at hospitals’ emergency rooms and morgues so they are better aware of the dangers of road accidents.
