Electricity poles through Dumfries and Galloway countryside set to be removed

Work is under way to remove unsightly electricity poles running through scenic countryside at Gatehouse.

Scottish Power installed an underground cable in the Fleet glen last summer to allow the overhead line to be dismantled.

Around six miles of cabling was lain between the former Gatehouse Station and the town.

The work to replace above ground infrastructure with a new underground line has been broadly welcomed.

Provost of Gatehouse Helen Keating said: “I think this is a very good idea.

“Anything that can improve the place is welcome. If all the cabling is undergrounded and the poles removed it’s bound to be better visually.

“I think most people will approve of it.”

SP Energy Networks (SPEN) said the power line removal work would take place in two stages.

A spokesperson said: “We are undertaking a programme of work to remove around 150 wooden distribution network poles in the Fleet Valley National Scenic area and replace them with underground cables.

“The first section of around 100 poles will be completed by the end of this week.

“Work on the remaining poles is expected to begin in July and be completed by December.”

The Fleet Valley has been designated an area of natural beauty and a visual amenity site.

SPEN has committed to removing some of its overhead line infrastructure as part of “essential reinforcement works to further enhance the natural beauty of the area”.
