Electrician suffered fatal bleed after fall at pub

An electrician from Long Eaton fractured his ribs in a fall and died from internal bleeding at a pub, an inquest was told.

Michael Paul Clarke, 53, died on April 19 at the Steamboat Inn, in Trent Lock, Sawley, after he fell.

Derbyshire Live reports he ruptured his spleen in the incident, causing a fatal bleed in his abdomen.

Charlotte Crangle, assistant coroner for Derby and Derbyshire, opened the inquest into his death at Derby Coroners' Court on Tuesday, June 8.

The inquest was told that Mr Clarke, of Winster Way, Long Eaton, was at the pub when he died.

It revealed he was an electrician by trade, but he was signed off sick at the time of his death.

A post-mortem revealed his primary cause of death was an intra-abdominal haemorrhage - a bleed inside the abdomen - caused by a ruptured spleen due to rib fractures.

The inquest was told this was caused by a fall, with a background of alcoholic cirrhosis and acute ethanol intoxication.

The coroner adjourned the hearing to a future date pending further enquiries.

Miss Crangle said: "Enquiries are ongoing in this particular case. I will set a date for a paper review in six weeks on July 20, when hopefully a date for the formal inquest hearing can be set.

"I do express my sincerest condolences to his family and friends."
