Electrical fire on Quayside with 15ft flames plunges Newcastle city centre into darkness

The Tyne Bridge was plunged into darkness during a city centre blackout caused by an underground electrical fire.

The blaze, which involved an 11,000 volt electrical cable, left 15ft flames shooting up into the air on Newcastle's Quayside.

Firefighters from Byker and Gateshead stations were called to the scene just before 10pm on Saturday.

Northern Powergrid said 535 properties in the NE1 postcode were then left without power.

Street lights around the city centre went off and the Tyne Bridge went dark.

Ciaran Owens commented on Twitter : "All the city lights then popped off and Tyne Bridge was completely black. Marvellous spectacle."

Another Twitter user Jon Whittaker said there was no lights on around the Swan House Roundabout and "as far as the eye can see".

The fire had already been extinguished when firefighters arrived and they used a thermal imaging camera to check for hot spots.

The area was also cordoned off to the public while engineers worked to get the power back on.

Electricity was restored to the NE1 area by 11.30pm.
