Electrical engineer working on pavement killed by car that came off the road

A workman in his 30s has been killed after being hit by a car while working on a pavement, police have said.

A major incident was declared after the crash at about 11:45am in Rochdale, which saw an Electricity North West electrical engineer sustain fatal injuries.

The man had been carrying out work on the busy Featherstall Road in Littleborough when he was hit by a vehicle that came off the road, Greater Manchester Police.

Another man in his 20s was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

The victim's next of kin has been informed, Manchester Evening News reports.

Up to 2,000 homes and businesses in the area were left without electricity for about four hours due to the incident.

A statement by the police said: "At 11.47am this morning (Sunday 17 October) police were called to a report of a road traffic collision on Featherstall Road, Littleborough.

"Emergency services attended the scene and two electrical engineers who had been working on the pavement were found seriously injured.

"Sadly, despite the very best efforts of emergency services, one man in his 30s was later pronounced dead at the scene.

"The man's family are aware and are being supported by specialist officers.

"A second man in his 20s has been taken to hospital in a serious condition.

"Initial enquiries have established that a vehicle had come off the road and collided with the victims. No arrests have been made."

GMPs Tactical Commander, Superintendent Arif Nawaz, said: "This has been a terrible incident and our thoughts are very much with the family and friends who have lost their loved one in tragic circumstances.

"As a result of this incident, around 2000 homes and businesses in the area were without electricity for around four hours and a major incident response was declared."
