Electric scooter rider charged with drink driving, no insurance and going on non-essential journey

The rider of an electric scooter has been charged with drink driving and breaching lockdown rules on non-essential travel.

On Monday, April 13, officers from Dyfed-Powys Police in Tenby charged the rider after they were found to be allegedly operating the scooter when over the drink driving limit.

It in unclear what excuse the rider had for being out on the scooter, which was also allegedly uninsured, during the coronavirus lockdown, but they were reported for non-essential travel as well.

A tweet from Dyfed-Powys Police about the incident said: "Electric scooters being used on the road need insurance. You must also be sober!! Charged with drink drive.

"No insurance and reported Non Essential Journey."

Police forces across Wales have been sharing examples of the excuses they have been given by motorists flouting the government's lockdown rules.

The guidelines say people should only leave the house for four reasons:

  • infrequent shopping for essentials
  • one form of exercise a day
  • for a medical need or to care for the vulnerable
  • work if it cannot be done from home

Officers have been given powers to fine people who are breaking the lockdown rules, leading to some unusual cases.

A driver who was stopped on the A477 in St Clears on Saturday, April 11, said he was travelling to Ireland "to collect a dog," before being turned around and sent back to Manchester.

Another man, from Pontardawe, claimed he was an essential worker when he was stopped on the A40 Brecon bypass on April 6. The Ford Focus he was driving contained cocaine worth £57,000.
