Electric Picnic organisers give urgent deadline to Government to make decision on festival

The managing director of MCD Productions, who promote and help organise Electric Picnic, have given the Government an urgent deadline to decide whether the 2021 festival can go ahead.

The issue has been brought back to the fore again after the Chief Medical Officer, Dr Tony Holohan, was asked whether he thought the event should go ahead next month.

When asked whether outdoor events such as Electric Picnic could be permitted for those who are fully vaccinated, Dr Holohan said “we wouldn’t have a major concern to express in public health terms about that if that could be achieved.”

He adds: “We wouldn't have a concern from a public health point of view to express about an event that happened that was confined to vaccinated people."

Originally, organisers had said they would restrict the attendance who had been fully protected from the virus.

Appearing on Today with Claire Byrne on RTE Radio on Wednesday morning, Denis Desmond said: "I would emphasise we are saying that for Electric Picnic, it would be FULLY vaccinated only; we are taking the ultimate precaution."

The event was scheduled to take place in Stradbally, Laois on September 24-26th.

But Mr Desmond said that they need to get an urgent decision from Government: "We have written to the Government, but we will need a response with a decision today, or at the very latest on Thursday. If this is let go to Monday then we are out of time."

The Minister for Health has refused to rule out the possibility of Electric Picnic happening in 2021.

Stephen Donnelly faced questions while appearing on Morning Ireland earlier on Wednesday.
