Electric Picnic organiser says festival set to go ahead in September as crowds of 70,000 await Government decision

Electric Picnic bosses are confident that the festival in Stradbally, Co Laois, will go ahead this year.

The event was originally set to go ahead from September 3 to September 5.

However, that was pushed back by three weeks to September 24 to September 26, with organisers saying this was to give them ''a much better chance'' of getting the all clear from the Government.

And with the likes of the All-Ireland final set to have crowds of 40,000 in the last week of August, Mr Benn spoke on the News at One about the prospect of the festival getting the green light.

The Managing Director of Festival Republic, which runs Electric Picnic, Melvin Benn said: "I'm investing, and all of the teams are investing in the effort to try and make sure that the Picnic can happen by presuming that we are going ahead and I'm saying presuming that we are going ahead, because let's be 100% clear here, nobody's told me I can't go ahead,".

Mr Benn added: "Well, I guess the status is very straightforward from my point of view, which is that I am very actively undertaking the planning of Electric Picnic.

"Because I very actively believe that the Electric Picnic will take place and I say that because I can't see any reason at this point in time why it wouldn't take place at the end of September. We are two months away from it," he added.

Last week, organisers released a series of proposals which explain how they believe Ireland's biggest music festival could go ahead at full capacity in September.

In terms of the main points, it's reported that anyone without at least one Covid jab will not be allowed access to the festival, while those that have been fully vaccinated by at least 14 days prior to the event will have no restrictions.

The proposals have also said that registration with the Dept of Health for the purposes of contact tracing will be required and that an event management plan to implement extensive health and safety requirements will be in place.
