Electric Picnic festival party is over as massive clean-up operation under way at site in Stradbally, Co Laois

The Electric Picnic party is over as a massive clean-up operation got under way at the rubbish-strewn site.

Organisers urged festival-goers not to leave a mess behind.

But litter – including abandoned tents and mattresses – was seen around the site in Stradbally, Co Laois.

Organisers posted on Facebook: “Climate change requires urgent action – we can no longer ignore the damaging effects we’re contributing to our planet.

“Let’s all play our part, pack up those tents and leave no trace here.”

There was a huge focus this year on reducing single-use plastics.

Some music fans buy cheap tents and choose not to bring them home afterwards.

Last year, bulldozers were used to clean up the campsites  at the site.

The festival urged revellers to bear in mind that more than 588 tonnes of waste goes into landfill after the Picnic.

One punter said: “I was happy to bring my tent home. I was tired carrying it out but I’ll have it next year.”

Festival director Melvin Benn also spoke about next year’s ticket sales and said: “Subject to our annual statutory meeting with authorities on Tuesday, tickets to Electric Picnic 2020 will go on sale Saturday at 9am.”

He added the festival is set to run for another decade.

Mr Benn added: “We have a contract with the Cosby family for 10 more years.

“They seem to like us. They have literally the biggest acts in the world come and play in their front garden so they’re pretty happy.

“They have the best festival crowd in the world come and camp in their front garden so we’re in pretty good shape with them so essentially we have a rolling 10-year contract.”

Electric Picnic 2019 saw more than 300 acts perform across a multitude of stages, with musical highlights over the course of the weekend.

Meanwhile, gardai dealt with what they called 453 “reported incidents” of illegal drug use.

Six offences involved public order along with:

  • one sexual crime
  • one minor assault
  • one theft
  • one arrest of a man for possession of an offensive weapon, and
  • four arrests for driving under the influence of an intoxicant, three of which related to drug driving.
