Electric Picnic boss pushes for festival to go ahead after CMO says he has no concern if only vaccinated attend

Electric Picnic organisers are calling on Laois County Council to immediately reverse their decision to refuse a licence for the event after Chief Medical Officer Tony Holohan said he had no concern with the festival going ahead for vaccinated people.

The event was due to take place from 24 to 26 September in Stradbally but Laois County Council refused Electric Picnic's licence application earlier this month.

The CMO made the comments at Tuesday's NPHET press briefing after he was asked if concerts such as Electric Picnic could go ahead for vaccinated people.

Dr Tony Holohan said: "We wouldn't have a concern from a public health point of view if everyone is vaccinated."

After the NPHET briefing, Melvin Benn of Festival Republic they are now "asking Laois County Council to immediately reverse the decision it took to refuse the licence and grant it immediately."

Speaking on RTE Primetime on Tuesday evening, Brenn said the argument that Laois County Council refused a licence for the festival based on public health advice was now invalid.

"The entire premise of why they (Laois County Council) said the festival couldn't go ahead has been overruled as far as I'm concerned by Tony Holohan."
