Electric GMC Hummer pickup reveals range; deliveries to begin ‘in weeks’

The first owners of the $112,595 GMC Hummer electric crew cab pickup will get slightly fewer miles range on a charge than they may have expected when the self-proclaimed super truck arrives in a few weeks.

The feature-laden Edition 1 model that will make up the first full year's production at General Motor's touted Factory ZERO in Detroit will be able to go 329 miles on a charge, tow up to 7,500 pounds and carry up to 1,300 pounds in its four-door cab and bed, GMC and Buick boss Duncan Aldred said Tuesday.

Previous GM statements cited an estimated 350-mile-plus range, but the difference is unlikely to matter much to the Hummer EV's early-adopting owners. They'll have plenty of time to recharge while they answer questions about the new Hummer's unique features and technology.

The Edition 1 is packed to the gills with goodies, including:

—1,000 horsepower from three electric motors

—0-60 mph times around 3.1 seconds

—Electronically controlled four-wheel drive for extreme rock crawling capability

—Multiple skid plates for off-road protection

—800-volt DC compatible electronics for fast charging

—Removable roof panels and retracting rear window for open-air driving

—Super Cruise hands-free highway driving assistant with automated lane changes for passing

—35-inch Goodyear off-road tires

—Adaptive air suspension

—'Crab walk' diagonal steering for parking and obstacle avoidance

—Four-wheel steering

More electric pickups, SUVs coming fast

The GMC Hummer electric pickup has been a sensation since GM revealed it in March 2020.

The lighter and less expensive models that will begin arriving in 2023 will go farther on a charge, Aldred said. Prices for those are expected to run from $79,995 to $99,995.

The Hummer is the first in a flood of new EVs GM will begin rolling out in 2022. Next up: the Cadillac Lyriq Luxury SUV in 2022, Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups to be revealed Jan. 5 and a Hummer SUV going into production in 2023. They're all expected to roll out of the sprawling Factory ZERO complex that hosted President Biden for a speech and joyride in the Hummer pickup last week.

Aldred said online requests for Hummer reservations thus far have run 70:30 pickup vs. SUV, but he expects the eventual rate to be 60% pickups

GMC does not expect shortages of computer chips to affect production, he said.
