Electric car maker Tesla wants to open centre in West Bridgford

A centre for the electric car-making giant Tesla could open opposite Trent Bridge Cricket Ground in West Bridgford, plans have revealed.

Proposals to add the American's company's signage to the former Sandicliffe Ford and Mercedes showroom site in Loughborough Road have been submitted to Rushcliffe Borough Council.

The California-based company already has centres in Manchester and Birmingham.

And, on its website, it says a Nottingham branch is "coming soon".

Nottinghamshire Live contacted Tesla but the company could provide no further information at this stage.

The company specialises in electric vehicle manufacturing, battery energy storage and solar panel and solar roof tile manufacturing.

Chris Hobson, director of policy and external affairs at the East Midlands Chamber, said: "Tesla would be a welcome addition to Nottingham’s business community.

“It is a globally-renowned low carbon, high tech motoring brand which has a lot of synergy with the economy we are trying to build here.

“It’s encouraging to see that, in spite of the ongoing coronavirus situation, businesses are still pushing ahead with investments which will create jobs and prosperity.”

The grounds of the former showroom have also been tipped for wider redevelopment in recent years.

A number of retirement apartments are in the pipeline, with the potential for a gym and sandwich bar.

Some residents told Nottinghamshire Live last year there was a need for family-run shops at the site while others wanted to see cheaper bars.

The planning agent as part of the Tesla application was listed as Fresh Design International.
