Electric car drivers could soon choose fake car sounds - and the suggestions are great

They’re known for being almost silent, but electric cars could soon get a lot more noisy, if a new federal rule goes through.

The federal government has revealed that it wants to give electric car owners the ability to choose which sounds their vehicle makes.

The update to the rules, which have been put forward by the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, state that drivers should be able to ‘select the sound they prefer from the set of sounds installed in the vehicle.’

But before your brain goes into overdrive thinking of hilarious possibilities, the administration added that it’s also looking at limiting the number of fake sounds that manufacturers should be allowed to include.

Despite this, many people have taken to Twitter to post their suggestions for fake car sounds.

In response to The Verge’s tweet, one user suggested Jetsons Spaceship sounds, while another though that a ‘stamped of bisons’ would make a good choice.

Other hilarious suggestions include Rick Astley’s ‘Never Gonna Give You Up’, blowing a raspberry, and rather creepily, ‘screaming’.

The proposed change comes shortly after rules were implemented in February 2018, requiring electric and hybrid cars to emit sounds at low speeds to make them more obvious to pedestrians.

This rule will applied to US cars from 2020, and those in the EU from 2021.

Our choice would be the Willie Nelson classic, 'On The Road Again' - that would be sure to catch the attention of pedestrians!
