Electric car charging point in Hexham still not working due to 'embarrassing' land dispute

Months of delays to the switch-on of two electric car charging points in Hexham have been branded as "embarrassing".

The EV chargers at Wentworth car park were built earlier this year, but are yet to be turned on due to "land ownership and power supply issues".

The wait has been criticised by Cllr Derek Kennedy, the town's mayor and Hexham West's representative on Northumberland County Council.

Cllr Kennedy, who lives nearby, described the situation as "absolutely ridiculous".

He said: "You just think, this should have been a really good story but it's turned into an embarrassment.

"I really don't know who the dispute is with. I had thought the car park was county council land.

"There are people turning up to use them. There are chargers on the other side of the car park, but these have been placed in a prominent position. What a mess.

"It's an absolute embarrassment. It's a really good positive story encouraging the use of electric vehicles in a really good spot and then the station is just sat there for at least six months. It might even be longer.

"I ask the same question every month and I just get told it's land issues. You would think it would have been part of the planning application. That's what planning applications do."

The chargers were installed by Transport North East, a committee that brings together the region's two combined authorities and aim to deliver a modern, robust transport system while promoting greener and more sustainable travel.

Asked about the land dispute and the delay, a spokeswoman for Transport North East, said: “As part of the Go Ultra Low North East project it was agreed to install two rapid EV chargers at Wentworth Leisure Centre in Northumberland.

"The chargers have been installed however unfortunately due to land ownership and power supply issues there has been a delay in bringing the chargers into operation.

"Transport North East is working with partners, including Northumberland County Council and Northern Powergrid to ensure the chargers are operational as soon as possible and we apologise for any inconvenience caused to users in the local area.”
