Electric blanket warning after Belfast bedroom blaze

A faulty electric blanket is believed to have sparked a blaze that ripped through a Belfast bedroom.

Firefighters say they were called to the incident at Glencregagh Park in the south east of the city after a fire alarm alerted the resident and they were able to escape and call 999.

A spokesperson for Northern Ireland Fire Service said they then scrambled four fire crews, two from Knock Fire Station and one Appliance each from Central and Whitla Fire Stations.

They added: "Firefighters were called to a fire in the bedroom of a property in Glencregagh Park.

"The occupant of the property was alerted to the fire by their working smoking alarm. Firefighters wore breathing apparatus and used three jets to extinguish the fire."

The blaze, which burned the bed and damaged a bedroom inside the property, took place on November 27 at around 9.50am.

"Thankfully no one was injured during the incident," NIFRS added.

"The fire is believed to have been caused by an electric blanket and the incident was dealt with by 11.04am."

Anyone with an electric blanket on their bed is being urged to "please make sure it’s in good condition and if in doubt buy a new one!"

"Smoke alarms, like in this case, can also give you precious few minutes of warning which could help you and your family to escape," they added.

"Remember to check your smoke alarms weekly! Stay safe everyone."
