Electoral registration has changed for the better

The automatic registration of people receiving passported benefits is helping close gaps in the electoral roll in working-class areas, explains reader Nick Long. Photograph: Guy Corbishley/Demotix/Corbis

Your editorial (Find those missing voters, Mr Cameron, 7 March) fails to understand some important changes arising out of individual voter registration.

All those in receipt of DWP passported benefits are now automatically migrated on to the election register. In some working-class wards in my borough this has resulted in a significant increase in those registered to vote.

As an election registration officer of many years standing I have seen positive changes to individual voter registration including the removal of many who should have never been on the register in the first place, among them property landlords, those who have moved and left the property, the deceased and, in some cases, children.

People can now, for the first time, register online. All that is needed is your national insurance number and date of birth. Those who want to vote can register far more easily.
