Dec. 08--Chicago Tribune Media Group's Naperville Sun reports: The anticipated February mayoral primary in Naperville is officially off.
A hearing scheduled to address three residency challenges to Matthew Dubiel's filing for inclusion in the spring election was cut short Monday morning after neither the would-be candidate nor his attorney showed up for the session. Dubiel filed his petitions listing a south Naperville address.
The prospective candidate reportedly announced Friday that he was abandoning his campaign, but he had not legally notified the city of his intention by the time the hearing began at 9:30 a.m.
A few minutes after the session convened, City Attorney Jill Pelka-Wilger announced that Dubiel's attorney, Christine Svenson, had just requested a continuance, but the board agreed not to grant the delay.
Each of the three legal objections, filed with the city clerk Dec. 1 and 3, noted that Dubiel does not live inside the city limits and thus may not run for mayor. A business colleague told The Sun last week that Dubiel was away and not expected to return until Monday. He was not available to comment directly on the challenges, nor on the reports of his plan to withdraw from the race.
