Nov. 04--Polling stations across California open at 7 a.m. Tuesday for voting in statewide and local races. Voters in Los Angeles County will decide who replaces longtime Westside Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky and determine the next sheriff and assessor.
Former state lawmaker Sheila Kuehl and former Santa Monica City Council member Bobby Shriver are competing for Yaroslavsky's office covering Hollywood, Beverly Hills, Santa Monica, Malibu and much of the San Fernando Valley.
After two decades in office, Yaroslavsky is retiring because of term limits.
In the sheriff's contest, Long Beach Police Chief Jim McDonnell faces retired Undersheriff Paul Tanaka to lead one of the nation's largest law enforcement agencies. For assessor, West Hollywood City Councilman Jeffrey Prang is on the ballot with John Morris, an assistant L.A. County district attorney.
Also on the countywide ballot is Measure P, an extension of a $23-per-parcel tax that pays for parks and recreation programs.
The polls remain open until 8 p.m.
Voters who have completed mail-in ballots can drop them off at polling stations. The envelope must be signed to be counted.

Nearly 5 million people are registered to vote in Los Angeles County, but turnout in recent elections has been low. In the June primary, 17% of voters marked ballots, officials said.
