CHANDIGARH: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has withdrawn the appointment of Bollywood actor Sonu Sood as the state icon for Punjab.
Punjab chief electoral officer (CEO) S Karuna Raju confirmed that the ECI has withdrawn the appointment on January 4.
Sood's appointment has been withdrawn due to his own vested interests in political activities in Punjab, it has been learned.
Sood has been supporting his younger sister Malvika Sood Sachar who has announced to contest the upcoming Punjab assembly elections.
The Punjab CEO had on December 10 last year written to the ECI recommending withdrawal of Bollywood actor’s appointment as state icon of Punjab which was approved by the ECI on January 4.
The ECI had on November 16 last year appointed Sood to the post.
