Eldon Square shopping centre evacuated after fire breaks out in restaurant's kitchen

Eldon Square shopping centre was evacuated after a fire broke out in the kitchen of one of the restaurants.

Fire crews from Newcastle Central and Gateshead were dispatched to the Grey's Quarter at 10.20am on Friday after a fire broke out at TGI Fridays.

Shoppers and diners were escorted from the premises as firefighters used two positive pressure ventilations and breathing apparatus to put the kitchen blaze out.

There are not believed to be any injuries from the incident.

Eldon Square was reopened to the public just before 11.30am when firefighters left the scene.

TGI Fridays remains closed to the public with it currently unknown when the restaurant will be once again open for business.

A Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue spokesperson said: "We got a call at 10.20am on Friday May 17 to attend Eldon Square due to a fire at TGI Fridays.

"We sent a crew from Newcastle Central and another from Gateshead who came across a fire in the kitchen.

"Crews used two positive pressure ventilations and two breathing apparatus to help put the fire out."
