LUCKNOW: As political parties in the state capital try to woo young first-time voters, data shared by the Election Commission of India shows that parties will also have to think of a strategy to interest 58,000 elderly voters, who outnumber the 18-19 age group in Lucknow district.
The district election office has recorded 38 lakh voters out of the 57.5 lakh projected population of Lucknow district.
“A total of 35,044 voters in the 18-19 years age group were registered in nine constituencies of Lucknow district. However, those 80 years and above were 58,657 in number. The break-up of the category is 49,508 between 80 and 89 years, 8,456 aged 90-99 years and 693 centenarian voters,” said Abhay Kishore, additional district election officer (DEO).
However, the DEO is still amending the list of voters. According to sources in Lucknow Cantonment which reported 11 centenarian voters, only eight were aged 100 years and above while the rest have given incorrect age.
Meanwhile, the DEO office added that there are 20.2 lakh male voters in Lucknow and 17.7 lakh female voters. Another 206 voters are from the third gender.
The highest number of voter registration was recorded in Sarojininagar assembly constituency, which was 76.3%, followed by Bakshi Ka Talab with 74.5%, Lucknow North (73.3%), Lucknow East (71%), Lucknow West (70.8%) and Malihabad (reserved) with 60%. Mohanlalganj (reserved) had 56.4% and Lucknow Cantonment 57.7%.
