Elderly woman taken to hospital after being rescued from flat fire

A woman has been taken to hospital after a fire broke out in her apartment block this morning.

Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue (NIFRS) crews were called to Cullingtree Fold on the Falls Road shortly after 6.30am on Saturday morning.

The Fold offers apartment style accommodation specially designed for over 55s who want to live independently with reassurance of 24 hour support.

Group Commander, Dave McComiskey told Belfast Live that the fire is under investigation but at this stage being treated as accidental.

"Just after 6.30 this morning we received the call to Cullingtree Fold, where three appliances and two officers were dispatched," he said.

"An elderly resident was rescued from a flat into the care of the Ambulance and then transported to hospital. The cause is under investigation but at this stage it is being treated as accidental. "

"Appliances have all left the scene at this stage."
