An elderly ambulance passenger is in hospital after a car crashed into an ambulance on the A19.

Just before 9pm on Friday April 14, a two-car collision on the A19 northbound near Houghton-le-Spring was reported, around half a mile north of the B1404 Seaton Lane junction. For reasons yet to be established, a red Seat hit a North East Ambulance Service vehicle.

The passenger, a woman in her 80s, remains in hospital with serious injuries. Police are asking anybody who believes they witnessed the collision, or who were in the area, to get in touch.

The North East Ambulance Service added: "One of our emergency ambulance teams was transporting an elderly patient to hospital on the A19 north on Friday 14 April when it was involved in a collision with another car. A passing doctor from the Great North Air Ambulance stopped to assist.

"As a result of the collision, further resources were deployed to the scene, including a clinical team leader, a duty officer and three emergency ambulance crews. Two patients were taken to Sunderland Royal hospital for further treatment, one of which included a member of NEAS staff. The patient on board was taken to the RVI with serious injuries with support from the doctor en-route."
