Elderly woman rushed to hospital after crashing into wall in Howth, north Dublin

An elderly woman has been rushed to hospital with serious injuries after crashing into a wall.

The incident happened on Windgate Road in Howth, north Dublin this afternoon.

The road has been closed off since around 3.30pm, while the woman was taken to Beaumont Hospital.

A Garda spokesperson described her injuries as serious and said the investigation is ongoing.

She said: "Gardaí in Howth are investigating a single vehicle serious injury RTC that occurred on Windgate Road, Howth this afternoon Sunday 2nd June, 2019 at approximately 3.20p.m.

"The female driver (late 70s), sole occupant of the car was driving when it collided with a wall. She has been removed to Beaumont Hospital where her injuries are described as serious.

"The road is currently closed and investigations are ongoing."

The accident comes as gardai reminded everyone to be "extra careful" following a number of deaths on Irish roads in recent days.

Speaking on Sunday, Assistant Commissioner David Sheahan, Roads Policing & Major Event Management, said: "Be mindful of the changing weather conditions that impact on road surfaces, never ever drink and drive, reduce your speed and arrive alive to prevent any further tragedy on our roads.”
