Elderly woman lured into basement by bogus caller with 'round head and rosy cheeks' as accomplice raids home

An elderly woman was left 'distressed and embarrassed' after a bogus caller lured her into her basement while his accomplice raided her home.

The victim was at her home on Avondale Road in Edgeley, Stockport, when a man 'with a round head' knocked at her door, claiming to be from the water board.

He lured the 83-year-old down to her basement where he said he needed to see the stopcock, police said.

The victim and the bogus caller were there for 'several minutes' while the man's accomplice raided her home.

The burglar stole items of 'sentimental value', including a gold chain with a sovereign which belonged to her great grandad.

The victim was left feeling 'distressed and embarrassed'.

Police have now issued a warning about the incident, which happened on Thursday, June 6, at 11am.

A post on the GMP Cheadle and Bramhall Facebook page said the victim had tried to confim the man's identity.

But he 'calmly brushed away her concerns' and said he had left his ID at the office.

The man was white and around 5ft 10. He was of 'large build' and had a 'round head'.

The offender also had 'rosy cheeks' and a 'posh' local Mancunian accent.

He wore a navy blue long sleeve sweatshirt and blue denim jeans. He was holding a notepad, police said.

In a Facebook post put up at 11am on Friday, police said: "We’d like for you to share and advise/warn your family and friends as to this particular method of deception to try and prevent this from happening again and to deter future offenders.

"United Utilities have been contacted where they confirm there wasn’t a representative within the area on that day."

Police are appealing for anyone with CCTV to contact them on 101, quoting reference number 146984N/19.
