Elderly woman left with serious head injury after being hit by car near Durham

An elderly woman suffered a serious head injury after she was hit by a car in County Durham.

The pedestrian was struck by the vehicle on the A691, close to the A167 at Sniperley roundabout , at about 4.25pm on Tuesday, December 10.

Police and paramedics rushed to the scene and treated the woman for her injuries before an ambulance took her to the Royal Victoria Infirmary .

A spokesman for the North East Ambulance Service said: "We got a call about the incident at 4.25pm and dispatched a paramedic ambulance to the scene.

"We treated an elderly woman who had suffered a serious head injury. We then took her to the Newcastle Royal Victoria Infirmary by ambulance."

Durham Police confirmed the force had attended the incident and assisted the paramedics treating the woman by directing traffic.

A force spokesman said: "The accident involving a pedestrian and a vehicle was reported here at 4.25pm.

“An elderly female has been injured and she has been transported to the Royal Victoria Infirmary.”

The collision caused traffic to back up in the area along the A691 while the emergency services worked at the scene.

The heavy traffic started to ease and return to normal at about 6.30pm.
