Elderly woman hurls homophobic abuse at gay man on bus during Manchester Pride

An elderly woman launched a shocking homophobic tirade at a gay man on a bus during Manchester Pride Weekend.

Shocking footage shows the woman abusing the man, who was wearing a a T-shirt with the words "homophobic abuse is criminal", as he chatted to bus passengers about his day at Pride on Saturday.

The woman, who is thought to be in her 70s, told the man: "You are a man, you are the son of your father. Where is your father?"

She also called the man a "fa****" and an "ar******", and described him as "disgusting", the MEN reported .

The bus driver then stepped in, telling the woman to 'keep her voice down and to mind her language'.

The man responded top the vile abuse by saying: "You have the freedom to be who you want to be.

"We can all be who we want to be, especially this weekend."

Karina Townsley, who was on the bus with her seven-year-old daughter and filmed the incident, said: "The man was talking to people about how he had put a red bow on a policeman, which raises awareness for HIV.

"It was a dead good atmosphere but then the woman started abusing him.

"She asked why he was gay, asking if he had been sexually abused.

"He was trying to ignore the abuse. Everyone was disgusted.

"When I got off the bus with my daughter she was screaming and swearing at the bus driver.

"I thought, 'I can't be bothered listening to this' and got off.

"My daughter was shaking, she isn't used to conflict.

"I was really shocked at first. I thought, 'am I hearing this right?'

"I am bisexual myself and have got lots of gay friends, and to hear things like that is disgusting.

"I thought the most shocking thing was that he was just sitting there taking it. It was like he was used to it."
