Officers say the woman was hit by a silver Peugeot 208 as she crossed at Coatbank Street near to its junction with the Faraday Retail Park.

The woman was taken to Wishaw General before being transferred to the Queen Elizabeth in Glasgow where staff describe her condition as “serious but stable”.

The 42-year-old male driver of the car was uninjured.
