Elderly woman dies, man injured in Toowoomba unit blaze

An elderly woman has died and a man has been seriously injured after a fire broke out in a Toowoomba unit complex early this morning.

Emergency services were called to the scene on Gordon Avenue in Newtown, at 3.30am and the apartment was well alight.

A 72-year-old man was inside but escaped the blaze and was taken to Toowoomba Hospital in a serious condition with burns and smoke inhalation.

A short time later, the 80-year-old woman was found dead at the property.

There is extensive fire damage to the unit.

Neighbouring apartments were also affected by smoke damage.

Police said investigations into the cause of the fire were ongoing and a report would be prepared for the coroner.

More to come.
