NOIDA: An elderly woman died after a lift at a high-rise in Noida's Sector 137 in Uttar Pradesh had a free fall on Thursday evening.
Residents claim that a child was also present with her.
However, police stated that the elderly woman was alone at the time of the incident.
According to the police, the incident took place at around 4:15pm inside tower number 24 of Paras Tierea society.
The tower has 24 floors.
The woman, identified as Sushila Devi (73), fell unconscious and was rushed to the Felix Hospital by the residents.
According to Dr DK Gupta, chairman of Felix Hospital, the woman was brought dead to the hospital around 5:30pm.
"The woman had injuries on the back of her head and some abrasion on her elbows, which appears to have been caused due to the fall of the lift. There was no pulse and her eyelids were dilated when she was brought to the hospital, suggesting a possible cardiac arrest because of the suddenness of the event," he said.
According to an official statement from the Gautam Budh Nagar police, the family of the deceased is yet to give a formal complaint in the matter.
"Around 4pm, the woman had taken the lift from the eighth floor in tower 24 to go to the ground floor. The lift malfunctioned and its wire snapped, leading to a free fall. It hit the ground after which housekeeping staff and other residents took the woman out of the lift and took her to a hospital," said Rajeev Dixit, Additional DCP, Central Noida.
Atulay Nehra, an advocate and resident of the society, said that the lift had free fall and due to reverse weight, it got stuck on the highest floor.
"While police are stating that only an elderly woman was there in the lift, a child was also there who is now unconscious. The elderly woman was rescued after 45 minutes. She was later taken to the Felix Hospital and was declared dead. In our society, the responsible person for this incident is the AOA who even after knowing that the lifts of every tower of our society are malfunctioning and need immediate maintenance did not work on it,” he said.
According to the residents, one more free fall lift incident was reported in the society on Thursday afternoon.
However, no injuries were reported.
As per the information received from the society residents, the elderly woman was going down to the ground floor for some work.
She was living with her son and daughter-in-law.
Residents of the same tower claimed that they even heard the noise of the lift when it fell.
The maintenance official told TOI that they are investigating the matter and aren’t sure if it is due to malfunctioning or some other reason.
