Elderly woman, 84, discharged from hospital after car flipped on its side in Low Fell

An elderly woman who was cut out of her car after it flipped onto its side is now recovering at home.

Emergency services were called to Station Road in Low Fell at 2.15pm on Wednesday to reports of a vehicle having overturned.

Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service dispatched crews from Gateshead and Birtley to the scene who used special tools to cut an 84-year-old woman from her car.

Firefighters were assisted by a Hazardous Area Response Team and one ambulance crew who managed to release the woman, who was complaining of chest pains.

She was transported to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Gateshead by ambulance for further treatment before being allowed to go home.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “At 2.21pm yesterday, police received a report of a collision on Station Road, Gateshead.

“Emergency services attended and a 84-year-old woman was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. She has since been discharged.”

A Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman offered advice to drivers to stay safe during the torrential rain hitting the North East.

She said: "With more heavy rain forecast please take extra care on the roads: - turn your lights on, slow down and leave more room between the car in front."
