Elderly woman, 81, caught with 3kg of cocaine in her wheelchair at airport

An 81-year-old woman was caught with 3kg of cocaine inside her wheelchair as she tried to board a plane, it is claimed.

Police found the drugs in the metal tubing of the woman's wheelchair just before she got on a flight from Colombia to Spain.

The pensioner has denied responsibility for the narcotics - and investigators are exploring the theory that the powder was planted on her by drug traffickers.

Colombian police say it is the fourth case involving elderly residents and drug smuggling this year, El Tiempo reports.

The woman was stopped at Jose Maria Cordova International Airport.

Reports named her as Irene Mesa de Marulanda, 81.

She has denied any knowledge of the white powder - claiming she had not had the wheelchair for long, reports HLN .

According to the authorities, the woman was travelling alone and told airport staff she had relatives waiting for her in Europe.

However airport authorities grew suspicious as the frame of the wheelchair appeared strange, and searched it.

Once they realised what was contained in the wheelchair, anti-narcotics officers had to painstakingly disassemble it.

Once they removed all the screws and pulled the wheelchair apart, they reportedly found 3kg of cocaine concealed inside it.
